Barbados Culture: The Barbados
Horticultural Society Open Gardens Programme
Each year the local Horticultural Society opens some of the island's
best private gardens for public viewing. The gardens open from 2pm
to 6pm on Sundays from January to March and Admission is BDS$15.00
(US$7.50) with BDS$5 to members of the BHS. Refreshments will be available.
The gardens will be signposted for the convenience of visitors
and further details can be found each week in the daily newspapers. For further details check the Visitor Magazine, the local newspapers
or call the Barbados Horticultural Society at (246) 428-5889.

Garden of Professor and Mrs Clive Landis. Lot 1 Fairview, Kendal, St John
Time: 2pm until 6pm
Refreshments will be available.
This is a very young garden, just over four years old of 2.2 acres. The entrance consists of a driveway planted right down the middle to the house of multicoloured Portulacka. The garden consists of rolling lawns all around the house with a variety of brightly coloured shrubs leading to the back of the house, which overlooks the coast towards the airport - a magnificent view. The Bismark palms in particular are to be admired.
Directions: To reach this garden go to the Norman Niles roundabout, take the left exit marked 'Bulkley' (highway 5) - drive on past Bulkley Factory and take the second right turn and on to the fork at Brighton Farmers Market. Turn left, go around the corner, following curving road for about one mile until a sign of the right says Kendal via Featherbed Lane. BHS signs will guide you for about two and a half miles to the garden.

Garden of Senator and Mrs Geoffrey Cave. Windermere, Reservoir Rd, Brittons Hill, St Michael

This beautiful home and garden is situated on the ridge at the end of Reservoir Road and commands a panoramic view of the South Coast. Lovingly designed and created by Mrs Cave with the help of Mrs Camille Knight-Nolan, this garden is an absolute delight. As one strolls around the garden one cannot help but marvel at the interesting groupings of various plant species and the abundance of colour, not only in the flowering plants but with the many varieties of colourful shrubs.
Directions: To reach this garden from Brittons Hill Main Road turn into Reservoir Road and go to the end. BHS signs will guide you. Parking is available on the open lot after the last house on the left.

Home of Mr Ole Dam Mikkelsen. Gibbs Hill, St Peter
Time: 2pm - 6pm

This garden of Mr Ole Dam-Mikkelsen is, only about twenty one (21) years old. He has lived in Barbados for many years and being a true horticulturalist has a superb collection of tropical plants. Both houses in this garden are surrounded by a coral stone wall with an iron gate, with a simple narrow lawn in front. Through the gate the whole garden with its riot of colour is spread out in front. Many frangipani and cordial trees keep the area shady so that the beautiful orchids and lush tropical plants are always in good condition. Mr Dam-Mikkelsen's orchids in particular are superbly grown and are beautiful specimens.
Directions: To get to this garden, take Highway 1, go through Holetown to Lower Carlton Village, turn right up Gibbs Hill and the house and garden will be the second on the right. BHS signs will show you the way from the highway to this beautiful garden.

#5 Frere Pilgrim, Christ Church - This garden is bounded completely by a thick hedge of Golden Palms. Beyond that in an area of roughly two and a half acres there are over one hundred species of palms. In particular magnificent Bismark Palms. Of special interest, a Rainbow Eucalyptus with a varied coloured bark, quite rare in the island.
#3 Frere Pilgrim, Christ Church - This lovely garden comprises two and half acres of mature flowering trees, palms, fruit trees, assorted shrubs, colourful crotons and an abundance of flowering plants. It has been created with much thought and care by the owners and one can wander at leisure over easy terrain. The abundance of colour reminds one of an English garden. An ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Directions: To reach these gardens take the ABC Highway as far as the Emancipation Statue (Bussa) and turn left up highway five as far as the cross roads at Boarded Hall. Turn right into Frere Pilgrim and BHS signs will guide you from here.

Garden of Mr and Mrs deVere Cole. #1, Husbands Road, Prior Park, St James
Time: 2pm - 6pm
Refreshments will be available.
This garden, of about five acres of rolling lawns, is bordered on three sides by trees which act as a windbreak for the 160 fruit trees of every kind. The ranch-style house close to the front of the property is surrounded by half an acre of massed flowers of every kind - a riot of colour, with the chrysanthemums being especially colourful at this time, as indeed this garden is throughout the year and clearly visible to passersby. This garden is situated opposite the Queen's College complex.
Directions: To get there, drive to the intersection at the top of the Cave Hill Campus, proceed up Hinds Hill and the house and garden will be quite easily seen. BHS signs will be put along the way to guide you there.

Garden of Mr and Mrs Gordon Walker. Grassy Hills, #21 Mount Wilton, St Thomas

This is a relatively young garden about eight years old. The house stands at the top of the hill with the half acre garden sloping down the hillside. There is a splendid view of all of Bridgetown and all environs from the balcony at the back of the house with the gardens spread out beneath. There is a huge variety of many rare and beautiful plants making one pause often to examine and search carefully around the nooks and crannies of this very interesting garden. Walk, look and enjoy.
Directions: To reach this garden from the ABC highway at the Clyde Walcott / CCB Roundabout, take the exit going towards Hothersal Turning and Jackmans (going North). Travel on this road through Hothersal Turning, Jackmans, passing through the Canewood / Lears Junction, Bibby's Lane and Exchange. Remain on this winding road, passing a Water Works pumping station on the right, until reaching a fork in the road. Follow the sign posted road to 'Mount Wilton' via Proute Village, Strong Hope, Walkers Spring and Clifton Hill. The entrance to the subdivision is on the right immediately after driving past the Clifton Hill Moravian Church, which is also on the right hand side of the road.

Home of Mr and Mrs Marcus Beckles at Trents, St. James. Five acres
of lush and spacious garden, enhanced by a beautiful lake, bridged
at several points. The Garden is named after the white Petrea plant
seen on entering the garden.
Gardenia
Home of Mr and Mrs Cecil Duckworth at The Garden, St.James. Designed
by famous landscape artist 'Tabora', the garden features
curves, paths and plantings, which complement each other. A riot
of bougainvilleas and secluded pool enhance this one and half acre
garden.
