32 players competed in Class C&D sections in the 2005 Classifieds held at Harrison College. Cheri-ann Parris wins the Class C, Kyle St. Hill &  Alchino Haynes  are placed 2nd and 3rd.  Sumant Nanduri wins the Class D, Asabi Layne and Damian Greaves are placed 2nd and 3rd.   Details...

FM Delisle Warner is the 2005 National Chess Champion.  Junior Champion Martyn Del Castilho takes the second spot.  Nine of 11 games were successfully webcast live despite technical problems with DGT boards & TOMA software!!..

2005 Second Qualifier

The second qualifier started at St. Leonard's Boys on 27th August 2005 with 35 registrants.  FM Delisle Warner wins the tournament with 7/8. Anthony Earlam (6/8) is in second place,  Dwayne Gilkes (6/8) is in third place, Mark-John Alleyne (6/8) in 4th place and Justin Kirton 5.5/8) is in 5th place.  Kelvin Daniel qualifies as 12th player for National Finals.  Results & Pairings..  Games..

Isam Ortiz (Cuba), Nadya Ortiz (Columbia) & Luis Ibarra (Mexico)

The Central American & Caribbean Under 20 Chess Championships for Boys & Girls are being held 11th August 2005 to 15th August 2005  at NUPW head quarters, St. Michael, Barbados. Columbian Women's IM Nadya Ortiz won the championship with 8.5/9.  The half point loss is due to her reaching Barbados late due to flight delays.  Mexican Youngster Luis Ibarra won the championship in boys section on tie break and gets his IM title and 9 round GM Norm with a score of 8/9.  The Cuban FM Isam Ortiz (8/9) gets the second place on tie break despite defeating the champion. Suriname Open: Kelvin Daniel and Wendal Meusa competed in the Suriname Open which was held in Suriname from 1st - 7th August 2005.  Kelvin Daniel has won the second prize in the open section with 5/7.  Wendal Meusa has scored 5/7.  Though placed at #1 in Under 20, Wendal has tied for the 4th spot in the Junior section.  Final standings..

T&T Open Junior Chess Tournament (25th - 28th July 2005)

Barbados contingent: (L-R) Dominic Del Castilho, Teresa Howell, Beverley Howell-Mayers (Manager) Darren Beckles, Wendal Meusa, Alex Jackman, Dirk Austin (Coach) and Martyn Del Castilho.

Alex Jacman won the U12 section with a perfect score of 7/7.  Darren Beckles was second in U12 section.  Martyn Del Castilho won the U16 section and Wendal Meusa was placed 5th in the U20 section.  U20 section was won by 12 yr old Cuban Elier Miranda

Curacao Chess Festival: Justin Kirton of Barbados is competing in Curacao Chess Festival (22nd to 31st July 2005).  His first game was a keenly contested battle which Justin lost ot the No 2 seed of the tournament GM Alexander Shabalov (USA).  He won his second round match against unrated player. Bridgetown Chess Bonanza sponsored by United was held on Saturday 16th August 2005 and was a great success.  The bonanza has attracted a lot of local players and tourists as well.

German Grand Master Henrik Teske is currently on a visit to Babrados and sharing some thoughts with BCF Vice-President Terry Farley and Junior Players Wendell Meuasah, Martyn Del Castilho and Dominic Del Castilho.

United Insurance Inter-School Prize giving ceremony was held on 14th May, 2005.  The Lodge School retains the overall Championship Trophy.

2005 Heroes Day Chess Championships was held (28th April - 2nd May, 2005) at Bridge House Conference Room, Cavans Lane, Bridgetown, Barbados.  The Championships were held in two Sections: Masters & Candidates.  Masters' Section is the strongest tournament held in Barbados.  IM Martin Neubauer (Austria), IM Humberto Pecorelli (Cuba), IM Martha Fierro (Ecuador), IM Kevin Denny (Barbados), FM Philip Corbin (Barbados & FM Delisle Warner (Barbados) are competing.  IM Martin Neubauer wins with a score of 7.5/10 & IM Kevin Denny is placed second with a score of 7/10.  GAMES..

Candidates Section has an interesting combination of youth and experience.  Young rising stars from Barbados Martyn Del Castilho and Justin Blackman are competing with seniors Terry Farley, Dirk Austin, Othneil Harewood.  FM Mario Meritt (T&T), Ravishen Singh (T&T), Cesar Ramos (VEN), Fabio Mensing (Curacao) & Giles Suez-Panama (Martinique) are the overseas competitors.  National Master Terry Farley wins this section with a score of 7.5/9  GAMES..

Heroic Bajans Stop Trinis - Monday 02, May-2005

IM Martin Neubauer from Austria is in Barbados as a coach for CAC squads for two weeks.  During his stay he is conducting three seminars for all interested persons.  On 16th April 2005 he gave a lecture on his Best Games at Power Pawns Chess Club.  He will be delivering a lecture on Rook Endings on 21st April at 6:45 PM at Banks Romulus Chess Club.  He will also deliver a lecture titled "Opening Preparation using ChessBase" at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Auditorium on 23rd April at 5:15 PM.  All are welcome to these open sessions.

The girls' Inter-School championship got underway on 16th April at Sagicor Sports Club.  Two rounds will be played per day on 16th, 23rd and 30th April 2995.  Results..

T&T Chess Foundation Training Camp

Muralidhar Areti, Shammel Howell, Craig Clermond, Felix Huggins, Justin Blackman, Donovan Austin & Martyn Del Castilho in Trinidad attending the Coaching Camp conducted by Cuban coach IM Humberto Pecorelli Garcia. The team had returned on 9th February.  In the Open Tournament held during the first week of the camp Martyn Del Castilho is placed second having tied for the first place with T&T's Cesar Ramoe.  Terry Farley is placed third and Justin Blackman is placed sixth.

Launch Ceremony of the National Olympic Academy of Barbados

Members of the Barbados Chess Federation attended the Launch Ceremony of the National Olympic Academy of Barbados held at Frank Collymore Hall on 22nd March 2005 at 5 PM.  It was a beautifully organised ceremony where NOAB logo was launched.  The history of our Olympians was enlightening and the dances were elegantly choreographed.  The staff of BOA Inc must be congratulated for the excellent show.

The 2005 Interschool Chess Championship sponsored by United Insurance has come to a successful conclusion.  Final Standings:  The Lodge School A wins the U20 division.  Harrison College A take the second place & the Lodge School B takes the third spots in U20 division. The Lodge School B wins the U15 division.  Queen's College A is placed second and the Lodge A is placed third in U15 division.  In U13 division Lester Vaughn A & St Leonard's Boys are joint champions & the Lodge School A  is placed third. The Lodge School A retains the overall championship.  Results...

Easter invitational rapid tournament (G30) was played on 20th March 2005.  FM Delisle Warner wins the tournament.  Results..

IM Martin Neubauer from Austria is visiting Barbados from 17th to 25th March, 2005.  He is being received at Grantley Adams International airport by Dr Kumar Areti (President, BCF), Martyn & Dominic Del castilho on 17th.  IM Neubauer will play active Chess Tournament with the some of the top players 20th at 9 AM.  He will conduct a seminar for senior players on 21st and one for CAC team (Boys & Girls) on 22nd at Banks Sports club.  He will play simultaneous chess exhibition on 23rd.  Please contact FM Delisle Warner for details.  On 24th IM Neubauer will give a lecture , organised by Romulus Chess Club at Banks Sports Club.

Swedish IM Bengt Hammar visits Power Pawns Chess Club on 25th Feb 2005:

Pawns were partying, Rooks were rocking, Bishops were boxing, and Knights were knifing in the clash of The Power Pawns Chess Club versus Swedish International Master (IM) Bengt Hammar Friday at the Garrison's Chess Court. When the smoke cleared, out of nine games played, highly commendable draws had been obtained by Mr. Sylester Niles, Mr. Wayne Gaskin, and Dr. Philip Corbin of the Power Pawns Chess Club, with those suffering defeats from the club being Corrie Harris, Victor Callendar, Stephen Daniel, and Vernon Griffith.  Even more commendably, upset victories were registered by two visiting players, i.e. the Sagicor Open Champion, Lodge student Martyn Del Castilho and outgoing Barbados Chess Federation (BCF) President Dr. David Jordan. The newly elected BCF President, Dr. Areti, was also on hand towards the end of play to witness the event. Details..
