DEL CASTILHO MAINTAINS GOOD START AT PAN AMERICAN UNDER 16
Barbados’ and the English speaking Caribbean’s lone representative at the Pan American Youth Chess Championships in Santa Catarina, Brazil, Martyn Del Castiho outplayed Panama’s Luis Pan in Round 3 action to stay on track for a personal best at the Pan American level.
Round 2 saw Del Castilho (2017) pitted against Number 6 seed FIDE Master Andre Diamant (2226) of Brazil which unfortunately he lost playing the black side of an Anti-Marshall System in the Ruy Lopez.
Del Castilho’s problems began when he initiated an inaccurate Knight maneuver which resulted in him having to sacrifice his Queen for two Knights and a Bishop. The Brazilian then execute the game plan cleanly give the Bajan lad no chance to counter.
In his 3rd Round Match against Pan, Del Castilho demonstrated a superior end game technique against the Panamanian to score his second victory.
In other action, Defending Pan American Under-16 Champion International Master Eduardo Iturrizaga of Venezuela, looks very much the class act with wins in all three of his opening matchs. Falling in the second and third rounds to Iturrizaga were Pizzocaro Gomez Gustavo (1981) of Brazil and Number 2 Seed FIDE Master Humbert Lopez (2326) of Ecuador.

Top Seed FIDE Master Axel Bachman (2410) of Paraguay also kept the pressure on defeating Mauricio Flores Rios (2131) of Chile in Round 2 and Diamant in Round 3.
Diamant to force in the, Del Castilho mishandled the opening to attempted a in his 2nd round match, showed no signs uffered a who is seed number 21 in the Under 16 Section, made light work of the unrated Brazilian in a Ruy Lopez opening.
Del Castilho faces Number 10 Seed Fernando Fernandez (2186) of Peru in his 4th Round Match when play continues.
