Barbados’s 13 – 15 team captures
top spot in Miami
A contingent of Barbadian youth recently
returned from the 10th Annual Junior Ornage Bowl
International Chess Tournament held at the Embassy Suites
Hotel in Miami, Florida. Competing against juniors from
China, Ecuador, Jamaica, Panama, Russia and Trinidad and
Tobago and the USA.
Barbados won the 13 –15 Division with a total
of 15 points from second placed Doral International Chess
Academy out of Miami and third placed Team China.
Leading the charge for the 13 – 15 team was
the Barbados Under 16 Junior National champion and Michael
Forde Memorial Open Champion, Alex Jackman of the Lester
Vaughan School. Jackman tied with Dan Pham of China for the
top position but had to settle for 2nd place on
the tiebreaker after winning 4 games and drawing three to
finish on 5.5 points out of a possible 7. Daryl Headley of
the Colerige and Parry School finished on 3.5 points while
Shawn Durrant of the Alleyne School and Katrina Blackman of
the Coleridge and Parry School collected 3 points each.
The Barbados 10 – 12 team placed third
overall with ten points with Chad Barrow and Justin Maloney
of the Lodge School and Mia Mascoll of Harrison College and
Damar Austin of the Lester Vaughan School each contributing
2.5 points. Other players in that division included
Nicholas Blackman of Queen’s College and Joshua Blanchard of
St. Cyprian’s Boys’ who collected 2 points each and
Deshannon Robinson of Harrison College 1.5 points. Quayquil
from Ecuador defeated last year’s champions Liguanea from
Jamaica by 1.5 points to top the Division with 17.5 points.
The tour was facilitated by the Barbados
Primary and Secondary School Chess Association with the
cooperation of the Barbados Chess Federation and was managed
by Beverley Howell-Mayers with assistance from Rhonda Duke.
Demetrio Moore was the team coach.
