Junior Chess Championship (14-21 Sep 2003)

Official Website         Games

The who is who from the Sagicor Open Junior in July are playing along with the best from Mexico, Venezuela and Ecuador in the boys section.

There are 22 boys playing in a 9 round swiss. Of these 2 are International Masters, Daniel Mieles of Ecuador (2468) and Rafael Prasca of Venezuela (2397), and 2 are FIDE Masters Manuel Leon of Mexico (2281) and Ricardo Osorio of Mexico.

In the girls there are 12 players and this will be a round robbin. The 12 are form Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Trinidad and Jamaica. Trinidad being represented by Desire Derrick and Jamaica by Deborah Richards, two time defending womens champion.

Besides National pride there is quite a lot at stake in this tournament. Under the new FIDE title regulations the winner of the tournament gets a 9 game GM norm and an automatic Internatinal Master title, if not already and IM. If there is a tie up to 3 players get the IM title but only 1 the GM norm. Same applies to the Women except that it would be Women's GM Norm and Women IM.

17 Sep 2003: Rounds 5&6 : Today the team stuck to its guns. Askari drew with IM Prasca and then defeated Vidal Rodriguez(Mex), to go to 4/6 and in joint 4th. (writes Kelvin Daniel from San Cristobal)

18 Sep 2003: Round 7: Another tuff day but Askari defeated IM Daniel Mieles of Ecuador and now goes clear 2nd. It was a good game and Askari sacrificed a pawn which Mieles gleefully accepted. However then Askari attacked thru the centre and sacrificed another pawn to put a pawn on e7. He threatened mate and queening the pawns. IM Mieles forced him to sack the his queen for a rook and Mieles then quickly lost. I hope they put the game on the site soon. Castihllo lost a tuff game to Ricardo Osorio(Ven), while Areti lost to FM Uriel Vidal Capo. Tommorow's game will be vital but I feel Askari can pull it off. Bar not, this win will woders for his rating (writes Kelvin Daniel from San Cristobal)

19 Sep 2003: Round 8: Eduardo of Venezuela beats Askari and gets an unassailable lead (7/8).  He wins the championship with one round to spare.
