A holiday of unique, timeless elegance in the seclusion of this gracious 250 year old, coral-stone plantation house. Set in 4 acres of lush tropical gardens at the end of a long drive and in a commanding position high on the hills of Barbados, this three bedroom house is arguably on the highest point of the island and offers magnificent views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
Lovingly restored original polished wood floors, lofty ceilings, antique furniture, paintings, and tall shuttered windows, all express the spacious charm of another age.
LOCATION
Situated in the Scotland District of St Joseph, the house is just 15 minutes
from the popular West Coast Beaches of Barbados or 10 minutes from the ruggedly
scenic East Coast.
It is 15 minutes from Bridgetown and a half hour drive from the Airport.
THE GARDEN
The N terrace, with its pond and fountain, runs the length of the house and
overlooks a lawn and mature garden which has spectacular vistas in all directions
and is dominated by a 200 year old Sago Palm with circular fan-like branches
which filter the evening sun. The garden is abundant with flowering plants and
shrubs and is attractively lit at night.
The orchard to the South of the house offers seasonal fruits such as Avocado, Mango, Cherries, Pawpaw, Banana, Guava, and Breadfruit plus a well stocked herb garden.
THE HOUSE
Chimborazo is typical of the plantation houses of the 18th century with wide
indoor galleries enclosing large formal reception rooms. The music salon boasts
a grand piano and a midi hi-fi which is also wired to speakers in both the kitchen
and the master bedroom.
The 48 foot long drawing room has a large television offering satellite TV and there is a video library. The owner's collection of objets d'art, acquired over many years of overseas travel, add an air of stylish sophistication to the decor.
Sunny, yet cool, the north gallery, with its crystal chandeliers, is ideal for the taking of afternoon tea overlooking the wild east coast and the lawn.
The professionally equipped kitchen has antique
Mexican furniture and delightful ceramics. There is a dishwasher, a fridge/freezer
with an automatic ice maker, a cappuccino coffee maker and a breadmaker for
hot fresh bread in the morning.
The kitchen opens out on to a completely secluded teakwood deck on the edge
of a valley giving the impression of being suspended high in the trees through
which the local monkeys gambol. Sunbathing in utter privacy, dozing in the hammock,
or dining under the stars - this deck is the owner's favorite spot.
The south-west master bedroom, styled in opulent
oriental luxury, has a large king size bed and en suite bathroom. There are
French windows to the south opening on to the pool.
The blue bedroom can be either twin or king size and features large casement
windows facing east and south. It also has en suite facilities.
The East bedroom has a double bed and its own bathroom and extra beds or cots
may be added if needed.
THE
POOL
Chimborazo House boasts the most unique designer pool on the island - built
out over the orchard, the water appears to flow over the outer edge and into
the trees. Secluded, but sunny the large sun deck boasts a barbecue, dining
area and sun chairs. The pool is heated when required.
