Barbados National Trust

Trust Week: May 11 - 17, 1997

Each year, the Barbados National Trust celebrates its work of preserving Barbados' heritage, by holding a week of activities. This year, the Trust's 36th year of existence, the Trust's activities are geared at educating Bajans about its work, recognising important heritage landmarks, and raising funds for restoration projects.

  • Activities officially start with a church service at St.George Parish Church at which the sermon will be delivered by the very Rev. Gregstone Gooding.
  • This service is followed by breakfast at Gun Hill in St.George.
  • On May 11 and 13, several buildings will be acknowledged as important heritage landmarks with the laying of plaques. The buildings being recognised this year are: Chancery House behind the Parliament Buildings, the Art Foundry at Foursquare Rum Factory and Heritage Park in St.Philip, Buckley Plantation Great House and a chattel house to be announced.
  • A Chinese auction is being held on May 15 at Bagatelle Great House Restaurant and will be conducted by celebrity auctioneers. The funds raised from this auction will be used to complete the restoration of Morgan Lewis Mill, the largest windmill with all its working parts intact in Barbados and the Caribbean . The Mill was placed on the list of 100 Most Endangered Sites in the World by the World Monuments Fund last year.
  • On Saturday May 17, the Trust holds an extravaganza at Welchman Hall Gully. This includes traditional games, guided tours of the Gully, demonstrations on traditional Bajan remedies, and lectures on environmental matters.
